What to Expect from a Boudoir Session in Lake County: A Complete Guide for First-Timers

Here is a walk-through of the entire experience at my private studio in Wauconda, Illinois, from the first conversation to the moment you see your finished photographs.

Our First Conversation

Everything begins with a phone call or message. I want to understand what brought you here, why you want to be photographed, and what you love about yourself. This is not a sales call. It's a genuine conversation, and it matters, because the best portraits don't start with a camera. They start with understanding the person in front of it. If we decide to move forward together, the next step is coming in to meet in person.

The Consultation

Before we ever schedule your session, you'll visit the studio, which is an easy drive from communities across Lake County, including Libertyville, Barrington, Vernon Hills, and the surrounding area. You'll see the space, look through album samples, and spend time with the wall art on display. This is where we figure out together what we're actually creating.

Most photographers take a session and then see what comes out of it. I work differently. Once you've seen what a finished album feels like in your hands, or stood in front of a large portrait on the wall, you'll have a much clearer sense of what you want to walk away with. We design the session around that. We talk about where a piece of wall art might live in your home and what size makes sense for that space. We look at albums and decide what kind of story we want to tell. We discuss wardrobe, hair and makeup, and the overall feeling you want the photographs to have.

The result is a collaborative session with real intention behind it, not a collection of random photographs we hope will somehow fit together afterward.

Hair and Makeup

On the day of your session, you arrive and the first thing that happens is hair and makeup, done right here in the studio by a professional artist. I want to be clear about what this is, because it's more than just a salon visit. This is a genuine pampering experience, the kind most of us don't make time for in our regular lives. It sometimes includes a glass of champagne, and it sets a tone for the entire day that is hard to replicate anywhere else. Most women tell me this is one of their favorite parts of the whole experience, and I believe it, because by the time we pick up a camera, something has already shifted.

Your Session at My Wauconda Studio

When you're ready, we move into the studio. I'll guide you through every pose and show you the frames as we go. You don't need experience in front of a camera. You don't need to know your angles. That is my job, and it's something I take seriously, because the right pose, the right light, and the right angle can transform how anyone looks in a photograph.

Most women are nervous when they arrive. That is perfectly normal and something I always anticipate. What I've found is that the nerves tend to dissolve quickly once we start, and the confidence builds from there in a way that usually surprises people. Nearly every client review I've received mentions how comfortable they felt in the studio, and that means more to me than any other feedback I could get. It isn't something that happens by accident. It's something I work at in every session.

The session runs approximately three to four hours from start to finish, including hair and makeup.

Seeing Your Photographs

A few weeks after your session, we'll meet to go through your finished images. Because of the conversation we had during your consultation, I'll already have a sense of which photographs work best for your album and for the wall art we talked about. I'll have those selections ready for you to review. From there, you'll look at everything, choose the photographs you love most, and make your final decisions.

This is typically the most emotional part of the whole experience. Many women tell me it's the first time they've looked at a photograph of themselves and genuinely loved what they saw. I never get tired of that moment.

If your order included wall art, I will deliver it to you personally. You're purchasing fine art, and handing it off at the door with a wish of good luck and a hammer isn't how this works. Artwork of this quality deserves professional installation, so if you'd like, I will install your portraits right where we planned during your consultation. This final step is important to me. I don't consider your experience complete until it is.
